Childhood and early life
Lee William Bill McNutt was born in 1925 in Corsicana, Texas. He worked with his father and uncle to distribute Dr. Pepper in the area, earning his business degree from Vanderbilt University in 1949 and a master’s degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. In 1954, he married Josephine Pritchett of Nashville, Tennessee and had four children with her. Bill McNutt was a football fan and became friends with Lamar Hunt, the co-founder of the American Football League (AFL). Hunt owned the Dallas Texans which later became the Kansas City Chiefs. This connection helped him secure financing to launch an ABA franchise in Dallas, which he named the Mavericks. After several years of success, the team folded in 1976 due to financial difficulties.
Bill’s brother, Lee Jr, who is also known as ‘Bud’ is known for his career as president of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes from 1998-2008. He served as president of the Dallas Stars from 2001-12 before stepping down to become vice chairman of Starwood Capital Group.
He currently serves as president of Delaware North Companies, LLC and vice chair of the board of trustees for Dallas Cowboys Stadium, Inc.
Business failures and successes
Lee William Bill McNutt was born on May 25, 1935 in Athens, Georgia. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the university of Tennessee in Knoxville to study business and finance. While there, he worked for his father and uncle, distributing Dr. Pepper in the state of Tennessee.
McNutt earned a bachelor’s degree in business at the university of Vanderbilt in 1951, after which he moved to Dallas, Texas, where he worked for Lamar Hunt, the Texas oilman and co-founder of the American Football League. There he earned a master’s degree from Southern Methodist University. He went on to become a minority partner in the Collin Street Bakery, where he specialized in baking cakes for celebrations.
After McNutt married his wife Elizabeth McNutt (née Weaks), the two decided to move back to Nashville, where Lee would start his own bakery business. In 1977, McNutt Bakery was among the top ten bakeries in the country.
The bakery was also known for its French breads, such as sourdough and onion breads.
In 1994, McNutt sold the bakery to focus on other business interests.
McNutt died on March 8, 2016 at age 82 due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease and other medical issues. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth McNutt and six children – daughter Lekki Dawne McNutt-Wakefield, sons Lee William Blythe II and Bradley Rowan McNutt-Wakefield, and daughters Leslie Margaret and Margaret Louise McNutt-White – as well as two stepdaughters, Joy Weaks Nash and Patti Nash Woottge-McNutt. <EOS
